So, Phil and I have been shopping without commercial packaging for about 5 months. We started composting last month, and we’ve decided it’s time to up our game in honor of Earth Day this month!
We are trying to fit all of our trash/ landfill waste/ garbage into one 24 oz mason jar. Before we started this zero waste journey, I used to generate this much trash in a day! I’m not actually sure if we can pull this off, but we are doing this to force us to think about what we do consume that ends up in a landfill.
The Other Stuff
Kitchen stuff, we’re pretty good at. All of our food staples are fresh produce or we buy in bulk with mason jars (rice, quinoa, legumes, etc). What I’m challenged to think about is all the other stuff: the q-tips, the toothpaste, old toothbrushes, sponges, small wrappers on things, packaging peanuts, etc…
This has also brought our ‘eating-out’ game to a whole other level. We’ve been trying to be good about bringing tupperware to restaurants if we have leftovers, and we’ve been pretty good for the most part. However, one tupperware and we would be over our max. It’s a lot more challenging than it sounds. We’re also traveling to San Francisco at the end of the month, which adds another layer of complexity.
We’ll be checking in on April 15th and of course May 1st. If you’ve done this/ have any tips, drop them here. We’re excited to celebrate how far we’ve come and also to keep on learning.
